There are 5.25 trillion pieces of trash in the ocean & the numbers keep going up

Here are 5 ways you can do your part to help clean the ocean

      1. reduce your use of single use plastic

It starts with you (and me!) in our everyday lives. On oceansociety.org it states, "Wherever you live, the easiest and most direct way that you can get started is by reducing your own use of single-use plastics. Single-use plastics include plastic bags, water bottles, straws, cups, utensils, dry cleaning bags, take-out containers, and any other plastic items that are used once and then discarded."

      2. organize a beach cleanup

If you live near a beach or a river, one of the best things you can do is organize a beach clean up with friends, family, or within your local community. It can feel intimidating but it doesn't need to be. We got you! Shoot us a DM on Instagram or email me at dylan@bornfromawave.com and my team and I would love to help you set one up.

      3. spread the word

Most people don't realize how bad the situation is. 5.25 Trillion is a big number (that is trillion with a T!). But it starts with a few people who care enough to do something about it and to tell others. You can be a part of this with us! Tell your friends, family, put it on up on your stories, or on Snapchat. Spreading the word helps, even if it feels small.

      4. avoid shopping fast fashion

According to the UN, the fashion industry contributes about 10% of carbon emissions and 20% of wastewater worldwide. Ocean Wise, a marine conservation organization, estimated in October 2019, that U.S. and Canadian households release over 870 tons of plastic microfibers into the ocean every year from laundry alone. This is why I created Born From A Wave and make all of our suits out of 100% recycled ocean plastic.I love shopping as much as the next girl, but if we all choose to avoid fast, cheap fashion and choose high quality, sustainable, eco-friendly manufacturing instead, we can do a part in saving the ocean.

      5. give to ocean conservation

There are many non-profit organizations working to reduce and eliminate ocean plastic pollution in a variety of different ways, including Oceanic Society, Plastic Pollution Coalition, 5 Gyres, Algalita, Plastic Soup Foundation, and others. These organizations rely on donations from people like you to continue their important work. Even small donations can make a big difference! We currently donate 1% of sales to Project Aware.
